Broad Beans

How I love thee.
Shame my wife and daughter don't. I always grow loads and end up eating most of them to myself.
Not even Using them as a glove will convince her!

She was amazed by this

Possibly my favourite vegetable
Broad beans on toast with a poached egg on top. Doesn't get much better than that. That's food porn.

  1. We both LOVE broad beans but all we can get here are frozen lima beans with zero taste. Do you mind if we drool over the photos?

  2. School dinner broad beans almost put me off them for life. Then I had them fresh from the garden. Nobody more passionate than the newly converted. We can plant them in the autumn here for a spring crop.

  3. I tried them once here in Virginia years ago and I don't think the plants did very well, possibly the climate was to hot and humid for them. From what I remember, the ones I did get were good but then I like about any kind of bean. I guess you will just have to enjoy them all by yourself!

  8. All kinds of beans are a staple here but sadly we can only get them tinned or dry. I tried growing green beans but they ended up so stringy and bitter not even the goose would munch on them!

    1. It's amazing the difference the climate will make to the taste of things. I bet there's loads you can grow that I can't in the UK

  9. I hated broad beans as a child but now we grow and cook our own, it is a different story. Yum! Especially when picked young.

  10. I grew a crop of broad beans as an experiment during the winter, and they were cropping quite well. However, then the weeks of rain came, up grew the weeds, overgrown did the the beans become, and the crop was lost. But I shall definitely be growing them again, because they were delicious. On toast with an egg on top though? Not for me, but Lester would definitely go for that!

    1. I'll try it but she normally takes a taste and they come straight back out. We normally freeze loads but we've had to give up our chest freezer due to lack of space in this house.

  12. I haven't tried broad beans, though I may do so soon. I do have success with dwarf beans however, they are so sweet that they don't make it to my kitchen very often.

Does this mean your daughter is going to have green fingers? I hope so :)
