Cockerel Refugee

My wife was somewhat unimpressed when I came home from work on Saturday with another cockerel. "We don't need any more" she said, I'm not even sure we need the two we've already got .
Buff Orpington Cockerel
This guy is big and tough though. The only survivor from a workmates fox massacre.
I figure we'd give him a chance to see how he gets alone with some of our hens. If he's too big for them or gives them too much of a hard time, then he has to go. But in the meantime I quite like the way he's so big and waddles about.

    1. We'll see how he gets on. So far he's not been too bad with the hens.

  2. There is a bit of buff in him...
    Good for you kev...
I too take on too many cockerels
They are worth their weight in gold when a predator is about

    1. I was hoping he might be of some use against predators but his track record so far looks like he's not too keen to defend his ladies

    1. He's got something of a cowboy swagger about him.

  4. Just keep an eye on your girls, if he is mainly Orpington they are notoriously demanding on the ladies to put it politely :-) He IS gorgeous though and as long as they can cope with him will make a lovely 'husband' for them.

He can't be all that brave though, if he's the lone survivor of a fox massacre, the boys usually fight to the death to defend their ladies!!

    1. I never said brave! I just hope he loves these hens more and will fight for them. This batch of hens is away from the house so good to have him on look out!

  5. We have had two Orpington cockerels, and they were both nice boys, but a bit on the lazy side, and we have not found them to be demanding on the girls. At the moment we are running two cockerels, a Buff and a Buff mixed. The blood line of the mixed cockerel has given him swagger and a more jaunty approach to life than the Buff pure blood.

I hope he settles down for you. We let cockerels live here until they start being aggressive to the girls, then they go into the freezer. It was kind of you to take him in and give him a chance.
