Fig Cuttings Have Taken

Back in August I posted about taking some cuttings from my mothers large fig tree
Well out of the four cuttings I took, two seem to be sprouting new leaves. A 50% success rate for a first try is pretty good I think. I'll leave these in this pot for a while longer yet to get established before I move them on.
I've also found a massive fig tree/bush at a friends house so I'm going to try air layering (as suggested by Texan) later in the year with those - Anyone have any advice/experience on air layering?

  1. None myself but Carol did some on gardeners wold last week!

Never had much luck with figs myself though, which is a shame as they are gorgeous. theres a lovely house in Lincoln with a huge fig which is always dripping with fruit

    1. I'm hoping that one day I'll get it right. I plan to dig some pits by the house and grow them up the wall. I'm determined that we will one day eat our own figs!

  2. I've never air layered, but at least the varieties popular in the North East US are super easy to propagate by weighing a small branch down, partially burying it and waiting till the section underground roots. Principle is similar...

    1. Yeah thats layering. I might try that instead then as thats an easier way to do it and I know just the tree! Thanks for your comment

  3. Well done, those fig cuttings look like they are doing well. We have a huge fig tree near the house, and that layers itself, so now looks more hugely shrubby and less like a tree! Will have to sort it out one of these days as the figs are getting further and further away from us each year and Lester has to climb higher and higher to pick them!

    1. Sounds amazing though. I'd climb pretty high for a fig!

  4. I have some fig cuttings too, must pot them up and keep my fingers crossed. Yours are doing really well. We have a white fig tree and want to grow a dark one, hopefully the pieces we have been given are the right ones :)
