My amazing dad brought me some muck round the other night. Around 6 tons he recons but I think it could be quite a bit more!

Our plans did change some what on where we were going to tip it when the trailer sank in to it's axle going across the second field! We decided that was the best (and only) place for it to go.

Luckily he came with the loader and bucket so he could move it from there and dump it in the veg garden. This meant a lot less barrowing for me which was good as there is a lot of muck to move.

As this garden was just grass on a clay soil before I need to add a lot of well rotted material over the next few years to make it easy to work so this is just the beginning.
Anyone else getting bulk amounts of compost or muck to add to their veg patch?

DeleteWe'd kill for that! We ordered some last year,from a guy at the garden centre who's dad is a farmer..it arrived littered with gravel from the truck's previous delivery. We spent more time picking out the gravel than was worth it.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago cattle were grazed on the neighbouring land, the owner let us collect as much manure as we wanted.We now have to buy it in bags as the cattle have gone.

I hate having to buy muck. At our last place we made friends with a lady who kept horses. She was always keen for us to have it.
DeleteThe only trouble with this muck is it's quite far for dad to to drop it off. I need to find a closer supply!
We scraped out 5 or 6 yards of old manure from the barn a couple of years ago & the garden loved it. Last year we were given a couple of truckloads of "composted" alpaca droppings & it grew billions of weeds. There were also many annoying small rocks that somehow got mixed in. This year should be better I hope. Last year the weeds won.
ReplyDeleteI think this will have weeds in it but it won't be as bad as the buttercups that grow in the bare soil here. they're a nightmare to pull out!
DeleteYou can't beat a gift of good muck. I'm not adding much this year as we filled all our beds with it last year after bringing it with us when we moved house. I bet we're not the only folk that do lots of journeys with trailer loads of muck when moving house :-)

I didn't really add anything last year - just chicken manure pellets. But I really want to improve the soil and break it up a bit as it's quite heavy clay so I'm adding plenty
DeleteI have loose housing for my cattle and give them straw for bedding and feeding and they waste silage. So we always end up with lots (tons)of it. My winter is spent using my pike and tractor and transport box. I find the organic pelleted poultry manure is excellent also. Aldi sell it.
ReplyDeleteI like the pelleted manure as well and muck from straw bedding is the best as it rots down so well.
DeleteI feel your pain, we've are half way through covering and digging in compost and manure into our garden. We've just double the height and built 4 more raised borders that need to be filled, as well as levelling the back garden for turf, so there's a lot of extra soil being moved about. Just think how lovely your soil will be once it's done xx

ReplyDeleteI have a nice heap of well rotted chicken manure that's been sitting for 2 years now. It's currently under several feet of snow but once I can get to it, it's going on the garden :)
Chicken muck is on of the best I find and if it's two years old even better! I might have to come and get some...
