Pig Ark

I got back from work the other day to find a pig ark in the second field (I really need to name these fields).
Littlee pig ark
I had mentioned to someone the other day that I was after one for the right money and they delivered! Shame they didn't say they were coming, it was a complete surprise. Still it's just what I wanted and should be great for a couple of weaners next year.
It's insulated but has no floor so I'll need plenty of straw for bedding.
Just got to wait until the spring now to get some pigs! (And I've got to build their pen!)

  1. After all the rain the UK has had I'd have thought an ark would be really useful!

    1. Yep, They might need more than that the way it's been - maybe armbands!

  2. I built a similar structure back when I had goats, it was made from an old grain bin that sat up on steel legs. I have plans to rebuild it into a metal building, kind of a metal Teepee of sorts with the funnel end sticking up and smoke can exit there. Your piggies should be happy in there!

    1. Your building sounds interesting. I was going to build my own but I haven't really got time and this was the right money!

  3. I asked the honeyman if he wanted to raise a pig, I am vegetarian but he is a meat eater. The pigs that graze, mmm are they called Heritage pigs? That was the kind I was thinking since we have plenty of pasture for one. So far he hast not decided to get one, but we are seriously thinking we will get a steer for him a Dexter.

    1. Kune Pigs are a type that graze and they're funny to look at which is always an advantage. I'd love to have a dexter at some point but a long way in the future - pigs are my next learning curve!

  4. Those pigs are going to make a mess of that nice field.

    1. They won't have a whole field! This is just where the ark was dropped. I plan to fence off an area near to my little orchard and have them down there. Don't worry I've seen the mess a pair of pigs can make!

  5. A 'pig ark" love it! Never seen one quite like it in the US but with good deep bedding, I'd sleep there too!

    1. Might be a bit of a low ceiling for you! The pig arks are really popular over here and it's how many people raise their pigs outside.

  6. We had a mix of these arks and farrowing arks, both are good in their own way. Without a floor though do make sure it's on a raise and not a dip!!

A couple of weaners will be as snug as anything in there. I loved the way our pigs always kept the inside of their arks spotlessy clean, clever things are pigs.

our pigs used an old large hen house to live in... I would have loved one of these!
we hope to have piglets in the new year!(not that they remain piglets for very long!)

    2. This one can be used for farrowing as well as it's insulated but I don't plan on doing that any time soon! All y fields are pretty wet so I might have to make them a raised area or something simular (or build a floor for it).

    3. John - yeah any large house is ideal, I was just lucky to get this one so cheap, as I said to Sunnybrook farm I was planning on building something, but with work being so busy (and the baby!)it's difficult to find the time.
